Why Women Should See This Desoto, TX Gynecologist

Women are often short changed in the health care system by well intended non-gynecologic practitioners. Dr. Rogers is a Desoto, TX gynecologist who is uniquely qualified to evaluate the whole woman and appropriately guide her in the direction of wellness.

Women have a physiology distinct from men and their health status should be monitored annually by a woman’s health physician. I routinely see patients with diverticular disease, renal stones, gallbladder disease and functional bowel disorders who have been told by other physicians that they have “female problems” without proper evaluation.

Conversely, I see patients with endometriosis or even gynecologic cancers treated as a gastrointestinal disorder. Women need to see their gynecologist first with issues such as abdominal / pelvic pain, bloating, indigestion, urinary frequency etc. so that a true gynecologic problem can be ruled out and proper referrals made.

Dr. Ronald Rogers, an experienced Desoto, TX gynecologist, has been serving patients for more than 18 years. Extended Cycle Birth Control Pill Packs

Extended cycle birth control pill packs are popular choices for Desoto, TX women who experience heavy menstrual flow, severe cramps, migraine headaches or just simply prefer to have four periods per year.

Now, extended cycle birth control pill packs are designed for a 3 month cycle. With the extended cycle, the progesterone effect on the uterine lining results in progressive thinning with a corresponding decrease in menstrual blood loss. The same effect can be achieved with the standard monthly contraceptive pill by changing the way it is taken.

For patients with menstrual migraines, the cycle can be safely extended to 3 or 4 months to reduce the intensity and frequency of headaches. A neurologist is sometimes consulted with patients who experience aura to determine the safety of estrogen use in this setting.

At your next Rogers Gynecology & Women’s Health OB/Gyn check-up in Desoto, TX, ask Dr. Rogers to see if you are a candidate for extended cycle pills.

The Controversy of Pelvic Exam Vs. Pap Smear

Women in the Desoto, TX – Raleigh NC area need an annual wellness / pelvic exam. The new guidelines issued by the United States Preventive Services Task Force have resulted in great confusion for women. Much of the confusion was intentional. According to the CDC, women are 33% more likely to visit a doctor than men and their annual visits for exams and preventive services are double that of men. The health care reform agenda is focused on cutting costs. Decreasing women’s visits to the doctor is the first place they have started. While it is true that many women can safely have pap smears every three years, every woman should have a breast exam, pelvic exam, and rectal exam annually.

The gynecologist is uniquely qualified to evaluate and examine the breast along with regional lymph nodes, as well as the uterus, ovaries and rectum. We are seeing colorectal cancer at younger ages and breast cancer continues to be a threat to all women.

As women age, certainly beyond age 35, their odds of developing cancers of the breast, colon, uterus, ovary and fallopian tube increase. These conditions can be elusive and difficult to diagnose. It is in the woman’s best interest to see a gynecologist annually to optimize their surveillance of these deadly cancers. Remember, pap smear and pelvic exam are not interchangeable terms. The pap smear is done during a pelvic exam.

Discuss with me at your annual visit whether you need a pap during your pelvic exam.
